The desire to make a difference in society or to fulfill an unmet need is sometimes born out of excitement and great zeal. Sometimes, however, it is born out of great pain and immeasurable grief. This was the case with the birth of Woman of Stature, which now boasts a company structure that comprises of WOS Network (Pty) Ltd and Woman of Stature Foundation (NPC) that hosts the annual Woman of Stature Awards and different Woman Rise Programmes that strive to address and alleviate socio-economic challenges that businesswomen find themselves in.
After losing her mother to cancer and finding herself in great agony, Charlotte Du Plessis, CEO of Woman of Stature, decided to channel her pain to a useful cause – helping and supporting those who were battling with cancer, and honouring her late mother in the process.
With her team of zealous women, she successfully put together and hosted the first Woman of the Year Awards as a fundraiser for the Cancer Association of SA Far East Rand Region where they raised over R100,000k. The awards were a great success for three consecutive years.
After relocating to the West Rand in 2002 and finding her roots in the new community, Charlotte saw the need to gather businesswomen together to raise funds for the Roodepoort Child Welfare. The fundraising concept that had taken root in 2001 was re-birthed in 2013 as Woman of Substance, and for two years, it was dedicated to raising money for Roodepoort Child Welfare, with annual recognition awards. Growth was inevitable and in 2015, the concept was renamed, and Living on Purpose: Journey of Discovery was launched with the core purpose of empowering women. Funds were still raised through The Woman of the Year Awards, which were held for the last time under that name at Emperors Palace in 2015, before the name change and the birth of Woman of Stature on the 01st of March 2017. The first Woman of Stature Awards was hosted on the 11th of March 2017. The Woman of Stature Awards has continued to be one of the most prestigious events in the South African event calendar and in its 7th year in 2021.
In 2020, Woman of Stature launched Forgotten Women: The South African Story, a book that was birthed during the world pandemic, Covid19, which catapulted women into dire situations and threatened their businesses. The book project was aimed at a dual positive impact on the lives of women. Firstly, all proceeds from the book go toward assisting women who have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, and, secondly, it is envisioned that the book will inspire many more Forgotten Women to rise up.
Today, Woman of Stature Foundation through its Woman Rise Programmes, has partnered with its members, corporates as well as philanthropists to promote the holistic wellbeing of women and encourage self-growth, professional growth as well as entrepreneurship. Woman of Stature also runs public webinar series, which were launched during COVID19 lockdown in 2020 as an online platform to stay connected to the community. The series has now evolved into a special offering for speakers, trainers and coaches as it assists them to get an income during the challenging lockdown times.
